Groups & communities: the complete guide

Create private groups for friends and family, or public communities anyone can find. Learn every admin tool.

1Private groups and public communities

  • Private group: invite only, up to 1,024 members. You can create as many as you like.
  • Public community: anyone can find it in Discover and join, up to 100,000 members. You can own up to 10.

2Create a group

  1. Open the menu and tap Create Group.
  2. Choose Private or Public.
  3. Add a name, description and photo, and pick members.
  4. Tap Create Group.

3Invite people

  • Share the group's invite link, or show its QR code for people to scan.
  • Admins can revoke a link at any time and make a new one, so old links stop working.
  • Public communities also have a public link like /g/your-group.
  • With approval turned on, people who use the link send a join request that an admin accepts or declines.

4Owner, admins and members

  • The owner created the group. Only the owner can transfer ownership or delete the group.
  • Admins help run it. The owner and admins can make members admins (with a custom admin title) or remove admin rights.
  • Members chat and, if allowed, add people or pin messages.

5Group settings

Admins choose:

  • Who can edit group info (name, description, photo)
  • Who can send messages (everyone, or admins only for announcement groups)
  • Who can add members
  • Who can pin messages
  • Approve new members
  • Slow mode: members wait 10 seconds, 30 seconds, 1, 5 or 15 minutes, or 1 hour between messages

6Remove, ban and mute members

  • Remove: takes someone out; they can rejoin with a link.
  • Ban: removes them and stops them rejoining. You can unban later from the banned list.
  • Mute: they can still read but can't send messages, for a set time or until an admin unmutes them.
  • Admins can delete members' messages. Only the owner can manage other admins.

Every action shows as a notice in the group so everyone knows what happened.

7Pinned messages and notifications

  • Pin an important message so it stays at the top of the chat.
  • Turn off a busy group's notifications from its menu; you'll still get messages.

8Group calls

Tap the call button in the group to start a voice or video call. Members get a ring and can join.

9Posting in communities

Members of public communities can share posts to the community feed. Admins can limit posting to admins only.

10Leave, report or delete

  • Leave from the group menu. If you're the owner, transfer ownership first or delete the group.
  • Report a group that breaks the rules; you can leave at the same time.
  • Delete (owner only) removes the group for everyone.
